Under Paulette Charles, long time former Head Mistress of David Rose School - and 'mother' to many of her students up to now - Sign Language became the official mode of communication for the deaf, displacing the oral method. That transition was in keeping with what happened in many parts of the world at that time.

We are looking for any kind of information or materials on the history of sign language and on the history of deaf people in Guyana.  Thank you for your cooperation.

And this is an earlier strand in Guyana's Deaf history, much earlier, probably some time in the 70ies. This is David Rose School - at that time sign language, as an accepted means of communication, was still very very young in Guyana - we need to do some research here; find out more about what it was like, many years ago, to be born deaf in Guyana.

This is Tia. Although she lives for the time being in California she has a lot to do with this blog - and with DiG. And we shall keep her to her word of coming back to share her knowledge and skill in ASL ... and we may have to teach her GSL!
